With the IPL 2026 league stage entering a decisive phase, Chennai Super Kings are set to take on Delhi Capitals in a high-stakes encounter on Tuesday, May 5. With playoff equations tightening and every match becoming a must-win, fans are eagerly tracking team combinations, leadership dynamics, and the availability of key players. One major question has dominated conversations ahead of the clash — will MS Dhoni finally return to action? While anticipation continues to build, the latest update from the CSK camp offers clarity, though not the one supporters were hoping for.
Eric Simons gives update on MS Dhoni’s availibility
The Super Kings bowling coach Eric Simons confirmed that Dhoni has not travelled with the squad for the away fixture. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter remains in Chennai, where he is undergoing rehabilitation for a calf injury sustained during the pre-season camp.
Dhoni is yet to make an appearance in IPL 2026, and his prolonged absence has left a noticeable gap in both leadership presence and finishing firepower within the CSK lineup. Providing an update on Dhoni’s fitness, Simons maintained a cautious tone, emphasizing that the decision to return rests entirely with the player.
“Updates on MS Dhoni are way above my pay grade. He’s not with us in Delhi, but he is improving. He will know when he is ready,” Simons said, suggesting that the team management is not rushing the process.
Dhoni had earlier travelled with the squad for matches against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, which had sparked speculation about a comeback. However, his absence from this trip indicates that he is still not match-fit. Head coach Stephen Fleming had also previously mentioned a minor setback in the recovery process.

Injury concerns pile up for CSK
Reports suggest that Dhoni is open to stepping aside if required, ensuring that the team combination remains unaffected. It underlines his selfless approach, especially at a stage where CSK are trying to find consistency in their playing XI. Having already played nine matches this season, CSK now have only five league games remaining. The franchise remains optimistic that Dhoni could return in the latter stages, potentially strengthening their push towards the playoffs.
Dhoni is not the only player missing from action, as injuries have significantly impacted CSK’s campaign. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the team has struggled with multiple setbacks. Nathan Ellis was ruled out before the tournament began, while Ayush Mhatre, Khaleel Ahmed, and Ramakrishna Ghosh have all been sidelined due to injuries during the season. So far, the franchise has named Akash Madhwal as a replacement, but the growing injury list continues to test their squad depth.
