PATNA: In a major political crackdown, the ruling Janata Dal (United) on Saturday expelled sitting Mokama MLA Anant Kumar Singh and his spouse, former MLA Neelam Devi, from the party for a period of six years. The party has also cancelled their primary memberships with immediate effect on charges of gross indiscipline and anti-party activities. The disciplinary action, ordered by JD(U) state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha, follows allegations that Anant Singh actively campaigned against the party’s official candidate, Neeraj Kumar, in the recently concluded Bihar Legislative Council elections for the Patna Graduates’ constituency.Instead of supporting the party nominee, Anant Singh reportedly backed Jan Suraaj candidate Anuj Singh, openly defying top leadership. The party statement further accused the Mokama lawmaker of repeated disobedience and utilizing inappropriate, insulting language against the party’s top leadership.Compounding the expulsion, the JD(U) has formally recommended the termination of Anant Singh’s state assembly membership. The party has moved a petition before Bihar Legislative Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar, seeking Singh’s disqualification under the stringent provisions of the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, popularly known as the Anti-Defection Law.
