Mahela Jayawardene contradicts Ajit Agarkar’s opinion on Rohit Sharma’s fitness and his availability before the start of the series against Afghanistan.
After having announced the squad for the Afghanistan series, Rohit Sharma, the legendary Indian batter, has been drafted into the team. However, his availability will be subject to fitness.
Rohit has had an impressive run in the season, as he looked promising in his run-scoring spree. Rohit Sharma has amassed over 280 runs so far in this season of the competition and has played some match-winning knocks in IPL 2026.
MI head coach contradicts BCCI on massive Rohit Sharma verdict
The Mumbai Indians head coach revealed that Rohit Sharma is absolutely fit. He informed that the Mumbai Indians medical team was a bit cautious with him as he was returning from a hamstring injury. However, he now is 100% fit, as per the Mumbai Indians medical team.
“According to me, according to our medical team, Rohit is 100%. After coming back from a hamstring injury, in the first game we were a bit cautious. Now he is playing as an impact sub just for team combination. He is a team player; he perfectly understands it,” said Mahela Jayawardene, the MI head coach.

Ishan Kishan might step in as Rohit Sharma’s replacement for India
Rohit Sharma’s absence might hand a chance to Ishan Kishan, the left-handed batter from Sunrisers Hyderabad, to step into the playing XI. Ishan Kishan replaced an injured star in the Indian team and earned a spot for him in the Indian T20I XI.
On the other hand, he might break into the ODI side as well if he steps in as Rohit’s replacement in the Indian ODI squad. Ishan Kishan has been in undeniably good form, as he has amassed 550+ runs so far into the IPL season, after having amassed several runs in the ICC T20 World Cup.
As of now he remains the backup opener for the Indian side in the squad against Afghanistan, and if he puts on a promising show, he might be handed a chance to feature in their upcoming series against England as well.
MI are looking to finish on the 9th position in the IPL points table
The Mumbai Indians are currently on the ninth position in the points table, as they have eight points alongside the Lucknow Super Giants. They cannot get to any position higher than 9, as even a win would not help them past the points tally of Delhi Capitals or the Chennai Super Kings.
However, if the Lucknow Super Giants win the game and they lose it against the Rajasthan Royals, which is the greatest possibility, then they are likely to finish the season in the bottommost position in the IPL 2026 points table.
