Santner Names Two Indians Overlooked Against West Indies as Biggest Threats!

With India’s T20I series against New Zealand just hours away, the wait is almost over. But beyond the excitement, Indian fans want an answer to one big question: has this team learned from what happened in England?

India went winless in that five-match T20I series, losing 4-0 with one match washed out. New Zealand could now present a similar challenge, with movement and bounce testing India’s aggressive batting lineup.

Can India’s batters dominate when the ball moves, too? Or does their attacking approach depend too heavily on batting-friendly pitches? This series offers an opportunity to show how much they have learned from that England defeat.

Before the action begins, Mitchell Santner’s comments have brought India’s selection decisions into focus. Two players he has identified as threats barely featured in India’s plans against West Indies—one did not play at all, while the other was called up only before the decider following an injury.

Those two players are Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Santner Expects Bhuvneshwar to Enjoy New Zealand Conditions

Bhuvneshwar was not in India’s original squad against West Indies. He was added before the deciding fifth T20I after Arshdeep Singh suffered a shoulder injury.

Yet Santner expects the experienced seamer to be a significant challenge in New Zealand, particularly with the new ball.

The New Zealand captain highlighted Bhuvneshwar’s ability to make use of whatever assistance a pitch offers. Even on flat surfaces in India, he noted, Bhuvneshwar can find swing and movement off the seam.

That skill could become especially valuable in New Zealand. If the conditions offer early movement, he has the control and experience to trouble batters before they settle.

The contrast raises a clear selection question. A bowler the opposition expects to thrive in these conditions was outside India’s original plans against West Indies and returned only after an injury opened the door.

Sooryavanshi’s Power Has Santner on Alert

Santner also recognised the danger posed by Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. However, his comments about Sooryavanshi make the youngster’s lack of opportunities particularly interesting.

Sooryavanshi did not play in the West Indies series. His place in the XI for this tour is uncertain, too, but New Zealand have still prepared for the possibility of facing him.

Santner pointed to the teenager’s IPL performances as evidence of his ability. His powerful, aggressive batting has already shown how difficult he can be to contain, even for established bowlers.

For India, that creates another selection debate. A youngster waiting for an opportunity is already receiving serious attention from the opposition. His attacking ability gives India another option, but that potential can only be tested in these conditions if he gets a game.

New Zealand Have Looked to England for Clues

Santner’s praise does not mean New Zealand are approaching Sooryavanshi without a plan.

The hosts have studied how England challenged India’s batters with short deliveries and hard lengths. Santner indicated that those methods could offer useful clues as New Zealand prepare for the series.

That is where the challenge becomes important for India. The batters will need to judge the bounce, handle movement and choose when to attack, rather than expect the same approach to work on every surface.

For Sooryavanshi, if selected, it would be a chance to show how he responds when an opposition has studied his game and conditions offer the bowlers assistance.

India’s Selection Will Be Under Scrutiny

The striking part of Santner’s assessment is the difference between the attention these players are receiving from New Zealand and their recent opportunities for India.

Sooryavanshi went through the West Indies series without playing. Bhuvneshwar was brought into the squad only before the decider as an injury replacement.

Now, one brings the swing that could suit New Zealand’s conditions, while the other offers the batting power the hosts are preparing to counter.

India’s challenge is therefore about more than maintaining an aggressive style. It is also about choosing the players best suited to the conditions and giving them a clear role. The team combination in Christchurch will provide the first indication of how India intend to approach that test.
