Fans erupt as Mosaddek Hossain and Nahid Rana steer Bangladesh to historic win over Australia in the first ODI

Bangladesh produced a clinical all-round performance to defeat Australia by 86 runs via the DLS Method in the first ODI of the Australia tour of Bangladesh 2026 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. After posting a competitive total of 284/8 in 50 overs, the hosts backed it up with an impressive bowling display to restrict Australia to 191/9 in 42.2 overs, securing a memorable victory and taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Notably, it is Bangladesh’s first-ever win in an ODI match at home soil against the Aussies.

Bangladesh recover strongly after early setbacks

After Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first, Bangladesh suffered an early setback when Saif Hassan departed for just five runs. However, Tanzid Hasan Tamim counterattacked brilliantly, smashing 54 off 44 balls with seven boundaries and a six to put the Australian bowlers under pressure. His aggressive approach ensured Bangladesh maintained momentum during the powerplay.

Following Tanzid’s dismissal, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto anchored the innings with a composed 67 off 86 deliveries, striking nine fours and a six. Although Litton Das managed only seven runs and Towhid Hridoy contributed a steady 31, Bangladesh found themselves in need of a late flourish to push towards a strong total. That impetus came through Mosaddek Hossain, who played one of the finest ODI innings of his career. Batting with confidence and maturity, Mosaddek hammered 86 runs from just 70 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, lifting Bangladesh to an imposing 284/8. Taskin Ahmed added valuable lower-order runs with a quick 20 off 16 balls to further strengthen the total.

For Australia, Nathan Ellis was the standout performer with the ball, returning figures of 3/38 in 10 overs. Liam Scott and Matt Renshaw claimed two wickets each, but Australia’s bowlers struggled to contain Bangladesh during crucial phases of the innings.

Nahid Rana destroys Australia with dominant bowling

Chasing 285, Australia’s innings got off to the worst possible start as Matthew Short was dismissed for a first-ball duck. While Cooper Connolly** attempted to stabilize the innings with 35 off 50 balls, Bangladesh’s pace attack consistently struck at regular intervals.

The visitors’ hopes rested on the experienced duo of Alex Carey and Cameron Green. Carey played a fighting knock of 47 from 62 deliveries, while Green top-scored with a determined 52 off 66 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six. However, the lack of substantial support from the rest of the batting lineup proved costly. Bangladesh’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the chase. Young pacer Nahid Rana emerged as the chief destroyer, producing a sensational spell of 4/41 from his 10 overs. His pace and accuracy dismantled Australia’s middle and lower order at crucial moments.

All-rounder Mosaddek complemented his batting heroics with the ball, claiming 2/37 in 10 overs, while Mustafizur Rahman chipped in with 2/24. The disciplined bowling effort ensured Australia never gained control of the chase before eventually finishing on 191/9 in 42.2 overs. For his outstanding contribution with both bat and ball, Mosaddek was deservedly named the Player of the Match. His aggressive 86-run innings transformed Bangladesh’s total from competitive to challenging, while his two wickets further tilted the contest in the hosts’ favour.
