New Zealand will enter the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 carrying one of the most remarkable records of consistency in the history of the tournament.
The Black Caps may still be searching for their first ODI World Cup title, but their ability to repeatedly reach the business end of the tournament has made them one of the most competitive World Cup teams.
New Zealand have reached the semi-finals nine times in 13 ODI World Cups through 2023. Even more remarkably, they have qualified for the semi-finals in each of the last six editions — 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023, with 2015 and 2019 taking them all the way to the Final.
That winning spirit and remarkable consistency make New Zealand one of the teams capable of mounting another serious title challenge in 2027.
New Zealand’s Remarkable World Cup Knockout Record
Few teams have been as consistent as New Zealand at ODI World Cups.
The Black Caps reached the semi-finals in 1975, 1979, 1992, 1999, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023.
Their recent record is particularly impressive.
New Zealand have made the semi-finals in every ODI World Cup since 2007. They reached their first Final in 2015 before losing to Australia and returned to the title clash four years later in 2019.
That 2019 Final became one of the most dramatic matches in cricket history. The match and subsequent Super Over both finished level before England were declared champions under the boundary-count rule then in use.
Despite repeatedly coming close, the ODI World Cup trophy has remained out of New Zealand’s reach.
The 2027 tournament provides another opportunity to change that.
New Zealand Reached the Semi-Final Again in 2023
New Zealand continued their outstanding World Cup consistency in the 2023 edition in India.
They started the tournament brilliantly, defeating defending champions England by nine wickets in the opening match.
The Black Caps eventually won five of their nine league matches and finished fourth in the standings to qualify for another semi-final.
Their campaign ended against hosts India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India posted 397/4 before New Zealand were bowled out for 327, losing the semi-final by 70 runs.
It was another tournament in which New Zealand reached the knockout stage but fell short of lifting the trophy.
Four years later, the Black Caps will arrive in Southern Africa looking to take those final steps.
New Zealand Start World Cup 2027 Against South Africa

Their third match comes against Qualifier B on 17 October in Harare.
The Black Caps then travel to Johannesburg to face Sri Lanka on 20 October before completing their Group Stage campaign against England on 23 October in Gqeberha.

New Zealand’s Potential Super 7 Schedule
For the schedule below, we are assuming New Zealand qualify for the Super 7. The ICC has pre-seeded New Zealand as B1, so these dates and venues are already allocated. Opponents may change depending on qualification.
New Zealand Super 7 Schedule
| Date | Match | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 26 October 2027 | 🇳🇿 New Zealand vs Pakistan 🇵🇰 | Gqeberha |
| 29 October 2027 | 🇳🇿 New Zealand vs Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 | KuGompo City |

The opponents above are based on the ICC’s current pre-seeded allocations. New Zealand are B1, while India are A1, Australia A2, Pakistan A3, England AB4, South Africa B2 and Sri Lanka B3.
If a non-seeded team qualifies at the expense of one of these sides, it will assume that team’s allocated Super 7 position.
World Cup 2027 Semi-Finals and Final Dates
After every team has played six Super 7 matches, the top four sides will advance to the semi-finals.
| Stage | Date | Venue |
|---|---|---|
| 🏏 Semi-Final 1 | 17 November 2027 | Cape Town |
| 🏏 Semi-Final 2 | 18 November 2027 | Tshwane |
| 🏆 Final | 21 November 2027 | Johannesburg |
If New Zealand qualify for the Super 7, finish among the top four and win their semi-final, they will play the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 Final on 21 November in Johannesburg.
For a team that has reached the semi-finals in each of the last six ODI World Cups, reaching the knockout stage would be nothing new. The challenge in 2027 will be going further and finally converting years of World Cup consistency into their first ODI World Cup title.
With their proven tournament temperament and remarkable record of performing on the biggest stage, New Zealand will once again be among the teams capable of challenging for the trophy.
If New Zealand reach the Final, they will play a maximum of 13 matches — five in the Group Stage, six in the Super 7, one semi-final and the Final.
